Laser for Pigmentation – IPL/AFT

AFT (Advanced Fluorescence Technology) is the next generation of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) that improves the texture, tone, and appearance of skin with minimal downtime.

This laser treatment is specifically designed to dramatically reduce the appearance of pigmentation caused by sun damage (age spots), also known as liver spots, senile lentigo, solar lentigines, or sun spots. It is also effective at reducing the appearance of freckles, melasma and irregular pigmentation.

Age spots are flat brown, grey, or black spots that appear on the skin. They usually occur on sun-exposed areas, such as the face, hands, shoulders, chest and upper back.

They are the result of an excess production of melanin, or skin pigment. Skin aging, sun exposure, and other forms of UV light exposure, such as tanning beds, are all possible causes. Although true age spots are harmless to our health, many patients visit our Clinic to discuss suitable options in treating the spots to boost their self-confidence.

AFT laser treatment has proven to successfully break down the age spots, and revitalise the skin with the stimulated production of collagen and elastin. It can be used on the face, hands, shoulders, décolleté, upper back and other sun exposed areas of the body.

Laser for Pigmentation and Skin Rejuvenation FAQ

How does AFT Laser Treatment work?

Our AFT Laser provides you with a virtually painless method of skin pigmentation reduction. It works by targeting the melanin in the lesion (which leads to dark pigmentation) with light energy. This light energy heats the concentrated areas of pigmentation, causing them to fragment or break up and be absorbed or removed by the body later.

Who Is The AFT Laser Treatment Suitable For?

Treatment is suitable for Fitzpatrick skin types I-IV. However, prior to treatment a free consultation is provided to determine your suitability for the treatment.

What Can I Expect During The Treatment?

Sessions last 15-30 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated. There will be little or no pain associated with your treatment and numbing is not required.

The area will be cleansed to remove lotions, cosmetics or perfumes and appropriate eye protection is necessary. An ultrasound gel is applied which will feel cool while the hand piece delivers precise pulses of light to the targeted area. When the hand piece is passed over your skin, you will feel warmth and you may feel an elastic band sensation to the skin. The area will cool down very quickly after the treatment. The treatment itself is fast and can even be done on your lunch break.

After treatment a sunscreen is applied, and you can return to your normal daily activities.

How Can I Prepare My Skin Before My Treatment?

At your skin consultation, we will give you specific instructions to follow before your treatment pertaining to sun exposure, proper sunscreen and additional pre-treatment care to follow.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

We will work with you to develop a treatment program to meet your goals. The number of treatments that you require to achieve your desired outcome will be discussed at consultation. Results can be seen after 1 treatment, but we recommend a minimum of 4 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart to achieve optimal results. We can then advise on follow up treatments (such as once a year) to maintain your rejuvenated skin.

What Can I Expect After The Treatment?

Immediately after treatment, there may be redness and sometimes swelling at the treatment area, this may feel like mild sunburn and is completely normal. We will give you specific post-treatment instructions. For sun damage, brown spots, age spots and pigmentation, the spots generally look darker for 3-7 days following the treatment. The spots will then begin to clear which will leave a clearer more even skin tone. If mild swelling occurs, you may use cold or ice pack, 10 minutes intervals as needed in the first 24 hours.

You can go back to normal activities immediately after treatment, but we advise avoiding direct sunlight for 14 days post treatment.
