Acceleration of skin cell renewal to remove melanin accumulation by means of an exfoliating action. Reduced amount of the melanin formed, decreasing the intensity of the spot. The main active ingredient in Cosmelan is hydroquinone, which inhibits the enzyme tyrosinase, a key player in the production of melanin. By blocking this enzyme, hydroquinone helps to reduce the formation of melanin, leading to a lighter and more even skin tone.
The treatment also contains other ingredients, such as kojic acid, phytic acid, and ascorbic acid (vitamin C), which contribute to the depigmenting effects and help enhance the overall effectiveness of the treatment. These ingredients work together to exfoliate the skin, inhibit melanin production, and promote a more even skin tone.
The prep
We begin your journey by prepping your skin, this is done in two ways. Firstly, you will use the de-pigmenting kit at home for two weeks prior to starting your professional in clinic treatments. This supresses the excess melanocyte activity by using tyrosinase inhibitors to prevent the build-up of pigmentation.
You then come 4 days before the cosmelan peel to have a gentle Mesopeel called Melanostop Trans3x which prepares the skin further in readiness for the intensive Pigmentation mask.
The in-clinic treatment
A single session in clinic where your aesthetic professional applies Cosmelan 1 mask for an intensive depigmenting action. We must let the mask act for 6-8 hours. This produces the removal of the melanin deposits of the skin, as well as its renewal.
Cosmelan is suited to all skin types and skin tones which means it is safe for anyone provided you follow the strict regimen put together for you by your practitioner.
The first four weeks is when you will see the most downtime which includes inflammation, erythema ( Redness), flaking skin and some tenderness. This can last anywhere from 2-4 weeks however you will be in regular communication with you practitioner and they can advise any adjustments to help improve your comfort level.
You can start to see results within the first 4 weeks however these will increase over the next 6 months.
You can experience redness, tightness, itching and stinging which is temporary and part of the process. This can be soothed by the Melan recovery in your homecare kit. You must wear Sunscreen daily and must reapply to ensure your skin is protected to prevent further pigmentation developing.
There is only in clinic treatment required however you may be on the Cosmelan 2 at home from 6-12 months depending on your needs.
This is a very manageable treatment and your aftercare will be managed through your homecare products. You will be in close contact with your practitioner who can ensure the experience is as comfortable as possible.
Your practitioner will provide you with a personalised home kit including the patented Cosmelan 2 cream which is a milder version of the in-clinic mask to be used twice daily for 6 months along with the Melan recovery balm to soothe the skin and a broad spectrum Sun screen factor 130plus.
This protocol will begin 7 days post in clinic treatment and continue for at least 6 months. Your skincare routine may be adjusted throughout to truly tailor this to your skins needs.
